Mother Earth 440x860 on a triangular canvas French yellow ochre with other earth colours and a collage of real corn grains

I collected the brightly coloured French earth while on holiday and was immediately inspired on returning home and driving through miles of rolling arable countryside, to make a harvest scene. A new kind of shaped canvas enabled me to express the visual metaphor of crop, seed, fertility and the mother earth yoni that has its roots deep in prehistory, although the subject itself is contemporary. Blue stone is very rare – but by happy accident I discovered that if I ground a black pigment in a particular way and blended it with a special white one I could make a dull blue – the secret of enhancing the hue lies in juxtaposing colours and choosing the best resins for the purpose.
