An old hag at Avebury stone circle.

This is one of the largest standing stones remaining at Avebury and the image of a mature, very stern, archetypal female head occupies the full height of one side. Hags were wise woman, capable of transforming their shape, of regenerating life after death, of exerting control over humans, from whom the witches of many European folk-tales were derived.
