Earthworks: Ty Isaf 800x600 Real earths
The inspiration for this piece immediately resulted from studying an archaeological site-plan. I was quickly able to realise the earth mother image I saw in it and which seems so central to prehistoric underground monuments of this type. However an extra dimension – her ethnicity, and following from that an imagined tribal identity – resulted from my choice of colours and use of pattern while sticking quite faithfully to the site plan. As with many paintings on archaeological themes the erosion of the earth surface seems an important aspect, so I scoured paint away from some parts of the surface while building layers elsewhere, using the thickest and most viscous paint possible.
